The slim Dell XPS 14z ultra-thin laptop arrives in the US

Posted by devzeal On October - 25 - 2011

Dell wants us to believe its new XPS 14z is the thinnest, fully-featured laptop on Earth. Measuring only 23 mm and weighing less than 5 pounds, one can rightly say it’s a zippy performer with a fantastic display. And gladly, this ultra-thin laptop has come to America.

Yes, Dell’s XPS 14z has been in the news lately in China, but the manufacturer has decided to start shipping it here in the US too. In fact, the XPS 14z has earned the reputation as the thinnest laptop computer with discrete graphics (a processing unit that is exclusively devoted to graphics) and an optical drive. But skeptics argue that Dell largely uses the term “fully-featured” as a marketing hype, and that may have caused the company to gradually drop the language, because it draws comparisons. It’s actually thicker than many laptops that lack an optical drive. That said; it incorporates a fast, little build with an amazing display.

Depending on the spec you choose, the XPS 14z is bundled with either Core i5 or Core i7 CPU, a 256GB SSD, or 7200 RPM SATA HDD in 500 or 750GB flavors. It also features a 14-inch 720p (1366 x 768) display that looks like it floats over the keyboard.

The price for this svelte laptop starts from $999.00 for the Core i5 edition with integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics, and goes up to $1,599.00 for the fully-featured Core i7 model with discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT520M.

The most common issues of the Apple’s iPhone 4S smartphone

Posted by devzeal On October - 20 - 2011

Consumers flocked in large numbers to buy the latest iPhone when it was released, after it got impressive reviews, but Apple’s smartphones are far from being perfect. In less than a week after some customers bought the first set of the iPhone 4S, dissatisfied users started complaining. Let’s take a glance at some of the issues and how to rectify them.

Sprint is slow:
Even though the wireless telecommunications network offers unlimited data, users are increasingly becoming frustrated, because it barely functions. Dissatisfied Sprint’s customers begrudge on the company’s forum that the service is too slow to be useful. Strangely enough, there’s no easy fix!

Siri doesn’t work all the time:
Siri is undoubtedly the most entertaining feature in the iPhone 4S, but sometimes connection is difficult to achieve. Some users even complain that the app doesn’t work at all on their Sprint’s 32GB Black iPhone 4S devices. Analysts suggest that the servers which handle the dictation and Siri backend might be overloaded. To fix this issue, turn off Siri, reset your network settings and turn it back on.

Poor screen quality:
A fresh new smartphone shouldn’t have a subpar screen quality, and yet, new iPhone owners are complaining about the same thing. It’s difficult to understand why the older iPhone 4 has a brighter screen.

With that said, it might be that the iPhone 4S has just been released and will get better over time. Well, who knows – we all have to wait and see!

HP Mini 100e netbook targets students

Posted by devzeal On October - 13 - 2011

With the addition of the Mini 100e Education Edition into HP’s line of netbook computers, the company was set to win the hearts and minds of students around the world. The lightweight design and configurations indicate the netbook is specifically built for students rather than a wider market. To sweeten up things, HP added the ability for the user to customize the lid, base and palm with his/her school’s logo. And you know, students like to do this type of thing!

The HP Mini 100e netbook is bundled with a spill-proof keyboard and an integrated handle. And the hinges and case are reinforced. Moreover, the outer lid incorporates a LED network activity lid, so that teachers can be notified about the online activities of each student. For example, the teacher can pick up the very student who is browsing the Web, when he/she is supposed to be studying in the classroom.

The Mini 100e Education Edition sports a matte 10.1-inch display with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 CPU, a 5,400-rpm 160GB HDD, and up to 2GB of RAM. Included also in the package are two USB ports, a modem port for developing countries, Ethernet and VGA.

A quick look at the Dell Inspiron 14z

Posted by devzeal On October - 11 - 2011

Dell is known in the computer industry to build innovative laptops, and the Inspiron 14z is no exception. The 14-inch laptop weighs only 4.5 pounds and features Sandy Bridge. But quirky design choices make the gadget hard to be lovable.

Dell Inspiron 14z

The configuration we received from Dell sports a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M CPU, capacious 640GB of hard disk drive and 6GB of DDR3 memory. The laptop is not too hefty, considering that it weighs just 5.25 pounds with the power brick and only 4.5 pounds without it. Moderately-wide viewing angles are made possible by the bright 1366 x 768-pixel backlit LED screen.

Some of the pros of the Dell Inspiron 14z are that it includes Bluetooth connectivity, and it’s very lightweight – especially lighter than majority of laptops that incorporate similar features. But all that glitters is not gold – this machine has its own share of disadvantages. And these cons include: the touchpad buttons require the user to exert too much force before they can be activated, and even though the keyboard is good, it is marred by the poor structure of the chassis.

In summation, the Dell Inspiron 14z delivers great performance in a lightweight chassis, but it has some strange flaws.

IBM plans to develop artificial human brain within 10 years

Posted by devzeal On October - 6 - 2011

The venerable IBM’s Watson seems to signal just the beginning of greater things to come. Not satisfied with creating a supercomputer that is capable of winning the Jeopardy quiz contest without much hassle, IBM has set a new goal for itself. The company has announced its plan to build a cognitive computer system capable of simulating the same number of neurons as the human brain. It’s also working to get this upcoming supercomputer to utilize less energy than the Watson, which beat human competitors, namely, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, on Jeopardy Quiz Show last February.

IBM Watson

John Kelly, IBM’s SVP and Director of Research, explained during a press briefing in Capitol Hill that computers are increasingly becoming bio-inspired.  As we learned, that was the main reason for deciding to build a supercomputer that will consume less than the 85 kilowatts of electricity that Watson required. For your information, the human brain utilizes only 20 watts of electric current. So, this new computer system will compete with us in terms cognitive capability and conservative use of electricity.

If you’re expecting to behold this new computer with artificial brain this year or next, you’d be disappointed. It’s still a work-in-progress, and International Business machines (IBM) is collaborating with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The company forecasts the project will be completed within the next ten years.

Retailers bank on Amazon Kindle Fire for holiday sales

Posted by devzeal On October - 4 - 2011

Several online retailers are banking on the $199 Kindle Fire to help boost their Christmas sales. These retail outlets say that the low-priced Android tablet, which costs less than half of the cheapest iPad, has the potential to draw in shoppers to their stores during the busy Christmas season. But some analysts argue that such strategy could also hurt future sales, since Amazon offers irresistible incentives, such as free shipping for customers who shop directly on its website.

Numerous online shoppers are increasingly turning to tablet computers, because the devices always place e-commerce instantly at the users’ fingertips. While a laptop may be considered too cumbersome to boot on a whim and smartphone too small to be convenient, a tablet allows one to effortlessly shop on impulse. That’s the main reason why many retailers believe that a quality, cost-effective tablet has the potential to drive their upcoming holiday sales. And if that can be achieved in today’s world driven by technological innovations, Amazon’s Kindle Fire is the only device that has what it truly takes to pull it off.

Almost every electronics store foresees that tablet PCs will be the cornerstone of Christmas holiday offerings, and they’re stockpiling these devices, just to be ready.
