As Amazon gets set to release a tablet PC, Forrester, a technology research firm, predicts the slate might be the very first potential competitor of Apple’s iPad. However, Sarah Rotman Epps, a Forrester Research analyst, conceded in a blog post yesterday that challenging Apple would be like the biblical David competing against Goliath. But she went on to say that the strength of Amazon’s brand, combined with its commerce assets, cloud infrastructure, content and its willingness to market hardware at a loss make the company a credible competitor to the iPad in the global tablet market. Epps projected that Amazon would have the potential to sell up to 3 to 5 million tablet computers in the fourth quarter alone, if it releases a tablet at a sub-$300 price per point and has enough devices to meet market demands.

The Forrester Research analyst further highlighted that Amazon, which is the manufacturer of the popular Kindle e-book reader, has what it takes to disrupt not only Apple Inc.’s product strategy, but also those of other tablet makers.

The Cupertino-based Apple Inc. sold over 9.25 million iPad devices in the last quarter alone, and keeps a stranglehold on the multimedia device market. The BlackBerry maker, Research in Motion, Samsung and a whole lot of other computer companies also develop tablets. As the yearlong tablet market share is, the rivals have not caused a tangible scare to the iPad’s market share. But with the retirement of the legendary Apple’s co-founder, Steve Jobs, as the company’s CEO, their grasp on the market can drastically tumble.

After disappointing sales over a period of just seven weeks on the market, the US computer maker, HP, pulled its iPad competitor, the TouchPad, from the shelves. And with other companies also reporting poor sales, many other tablets will most likely go down the drain with the HP TouchPad.

Even though Amazon is yet to publicly announce its production of a tablet computer, many press reports said the online retailer will unveil one this year.

Lenovo ThinkPad X220 review

Posted by devzeal On August - 26 - 2011

Deemed as the best-of-the-breed ultraportable laptop by analysts, the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is the latest model that replaced the X201 and keeps the ThinkPad fans amazed. With a 12.5-inch display, it’s light, fast and sports buttonless touchpad and a long-stroke keyboard. With a bottom-mounted slice, the laptop has an impressive 23-hour battery life.

In all honesty, you won’t find much downside of the ThinkPad X220. However, the boxy, businesslike aura and a bit cluttered keyboard deck do not convey the sex appeal some consumers cherish. Some keys look a bit awkward, such as the unnecessarily large “Delete” and “Esc” keys located above the main alphabetical keys. Many technology analysts argue that this odd key configuration is to fascilitate typing and not to hamper it.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 has various configurations with a starting price of $1,256.18. Just as you may expect, there are additional costs if you choose higher-end CPU, more memory RAM and better hard disk drive instead of the standard one. The hardware configuration accommodates a maximum of 8GB of RAM. As a potential customer, you have the freedom to choose from Intel Core i3 to Core i7 CPU. The starting option for HDD is 160GB and ends with 160GB of SSD. The 12.5-inch display with 1366 x 768-pixel resolution comes in two flavors: one flavor has an IPS panel for wider viewing angles, and the other one comes without that functionality.

When we gave the portable Lenovo ThinkPad X220 laptop a test drive, we found out that 1080p movies, even those with high-bit-rates, play as smoothly as desired.

The buttonless touchpad design enables the user to press down the left or right edge to click. This feature makes the touchpad more user-friendly that standard buttons when you use the thumb and forefinger of one hand. There are two normal buttons placed right above the touchpad, and the Lenovo’s trademark TrackPoint eraserhead-pointing utility is also in place. At the top of the keyboard deck, the toolbox (ThinkVantage) buttons join forces with the system’s volume rocker, the 720p webcam and mute buttons for the dual microphones.

Apple plans to launch the next-gen iPad in early 2012

Posted by devzeal On August - 25 - 2011

We’ve got reliable information that Apple Inc. is planning to start the trial production of its next-gen iPad sometime in October – in approximately two months time. Wall Street Journal reported that the Cupertino-based computer company also hopes the tablet PC will be ready for launching in early 2012.

iPad 2

Some people familiar with the plans told Tablet Inyo that Apple is working with its computer accessories’ suppliers and a system assembler based in Asia on the much-anticipated iPad 3. It has already placed orders for the key accessories, such as, chips and display panels. An Apple’s component supplier told us on condition of anonymity that the high-tech company has already ordered for accessories for approximately 1.5 million iPad 3 tablet devices in the fourth quarter.

According to other information reaching us, we expect the iPad 3 to sport a high resolution 2048 x 1536 pixel display. This comes as an upgrade to the 1024 x 768 pixel display found on the iPad 2. The iPad 3 will also reportedly feature a 9.7-inch display, which is another upgrade from the iPad 2’s 9.5-inch screen. When we called Apple’s office yesterday for confirmation and also to reaffirm if the expected OLED screen will be included in the tablet, we were told that its spokesperson wasn’t available for comment.

Due to the high cost of production of devices in the US, the Cupertino giant sources iPads’ components in Asia and assembles them at Hon Hai Precision Industry Company in Taiwan.

For those of you who don’t remember, the iPad 2 was announced by Apple last March, only fifteen months after the release of the first version of the iPad. The quick succession of releases has in a large way helped the company to maintain its stranglehold on the global tablet market share, which a few days ago claimed the HP TouchPad as its first victim. Considering the fact that Apple sold 9.25 million iPad tablets last quarter alone, there’s no end in sight to that domination.

What do you do if your HDMI cable is too short?

Posted by admin On August - 2 - 2011

More high definition signals are transmitted today through what are known as HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cables. For some consumers, finding the correct length of cable can be quite a task. In the past, when coaxial cable was used it could be run over rather long distances. The cable could then be cut to the desired length and a connector installed at the end. However, this is not the case when using today’s hdmi cable. Actually, some different actions need to be taken if you find your HDMI cable is too short.

Another change that has occurred is how TVs take up space. In the past, they were in consoles on the floor or rested upon tables. The cables could easily be hidden behind the television. However, with today’s flat screen TVs being mounted on walls or with rotating mounts, most consumers really don’t want a cable traveling down the wall. Therefore, more of them want the cables to be buried within the wall. With this maneuvering through walls, it often ends up that the cable you thought would be long enough, simply is not.
