Here’s another feather added to Dell’s crown. The new Dell Vostro 3300 laptop comes with an Intel Core I3 370M processor with 2GB memory and 250GB hard drive. The included 2-megapixel Webcam with better clarity, sound-recording and light sensitivity takes it to the topmost choice for video-conferencing. Though a robust battery would have been an added advantage but its rare anti-glare screen renders it best. It comes with an in-built operating system of Windows 7 Professional and a 3.3-inch LED-backlit display with a 16×9 aspect ratio and a native resolution of 1,366×768 pixels. At $868, its a great casual professional companion.

The Gateway NV7901u comes with a 2.26 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics and offers a decent performance. It has a bright 17.3-inch LED-backlit screen, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1,600×900 native resolution. The integrated speakers offer a better than average sound quality. There are the usual HDMI and USB ports on the laptop for extending the connectivity, though eSata and ExpressCard ports are absent. A 500GB hard disk and 4GB RAM along with great graphics offering a good performance making this is the laptop to go for.

Another Dell product in our collection — The chassis Dell Adamo XPS consists of a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor and Mobile Intel GS45 (integrated) graphics. With the keyboard sitting at about a 20-degree angle, it provides a better raised typing experience than the conventional flat one. Its lack of SD cardslot is overcome by the fact that it is perfect for everyday multitasking. Added to it are 4GB, 800MHz DDR2 memory and 128GB SSD hard drive. The 13.4-inch LED display has a 1,366×768-pixel native resolution. At $1,999, Dell has put great efforts in creating high-end products. Way to go!

With an Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition I7-920XM running at 2 GHz and an 8GB RAM the Origin EON18 is a powerhouse of performance.  Its 18-inch, 1,920×1,080-pixel screen, has strong colors and brightness and offers a wide viewing angle. The laptop has Dolby Home Theater enabled and can output its audio to 7.1 surround sound. It features a HDMI-out and HDMI-in, a Blu-ray player, and a flip camera along with the average addons. The system is a complete entertainment system featuring a TV tuner card. With dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 285M GPUs this laptop is a gamer’s dream come true.

HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx is a laptop for a serious computer user featuring a 6GB RAM and 1.6GHz Core i7 processor.  These coupled with a speedy 500GB hard disk make the dv7-3085dx a big winner in the league, considering the price it is available for.  The HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx is one of the fastest-performing laptop in the higher range in terms of multitasking and handling applications like Photoshop. The only let down is the low end GeForce 230M GPU which is not so great. The glossy 16.9 ratio 17.3-inch LED screen offers a good view experience. Overall, the dv7-3085dx is a fast all round laptop for built for the power user.

The ultra premium Sony VAIO Z128GX features an Nvidia GeForce 300 GPU, and a 1,600×900-pixel resolution for the 13-inch display. The make is of brushed metal and gives a feeling of sturdiness. The 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 M520 processor coupled with the Nvidia GPU is a powerful combination for all but the most demanding programs. A possible flaw would be the manual graphics switching instead of the Optimus enabled software switch. The VAIO Z series has the standard set of ports and connections for a laptop of this size only lacking a Blue-Ray drive. Overall is an enviable status symbol with a powerful performance but high price.

The Asus N82JV-X1 is a mid-size laptop at just $999. It has an i5 processor from Intel, which speeds up the processing. The Nvidia graphics card renders awesome graphics for gaming, the only con being the poor battery life. A raised keyboard, along-with the 14-inch backlit keyboard are its other features. The webcam is good and can be used optimally at 640×480 resolutions. It has the latest 3.0 USB port, and Altec-Lansing speakers provide average sound quality. The main reason to buy this is its i5 processor which can handle multi-tasking with considerable ease.

With Harmon Kardon speakers, the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 laptop is a great buy at 1049$. It can be used as a laptop as well as a speaker connected to any i-Pod, even when it is turned off. The viewing angles on its 14 inch LED backlit screen are very good, and the colours seem to be fine too. A raised keyboard and a DVD burner are some other features of this laptop. Although it has a short battery life, but the great combination of audio-video graphics courtesy the Nvidia Optimus card make it an ideal mid-size laptop.

The lightweight and slim HP Envy 15-1050nr packs more power than any other laptop in this range. It houses an Intel Core i7 720QM with 6GB of RAM and delivers a smashing performance. The 15.6-inch LED wide-screen display has a 1,920×1,080 native pixel resolution, which is perfect for 1080p HD video. It also features a 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 card for gaming on the go. All in all, the looks and feel of this machine can rival that of a Macbook and it is truly a status symbol to go for.

Sony’s VAIO F126 is driven by an Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce 330M GPU. It has a hard drive of 640GB along with a 6GB RAM. With this great combo, it is one of the best consumer laptops right now in the market. The F126 consists of a 1,600×900-pixel resolution display, which is a definite step up above the average 15.6 inch screen laptop. With its backlit keyboard, an ExpressCard slot, eSata and HDMI port and a Memory stick reader of VAIO offers a good experience.  All in all, Sony’s high-end Vaio F series laptop is fast and feature-packed, although lacking good battery life.

The Alienware M11x compactness as an ultraportable gaming machine is hard to beat. The M11x is accelerated by an Nvidia GeForce GT 335M graphics card with 1GB RAM and with its Optimus graphics switching technology has the power to take down most of the current mainstream gaming titles. The 11.6 inch, 1,366×768-pixel resolution screen gives crisp and clear quality which is ideal for gaming. A great addition is the inclusion of 5.1 surround sound speakers. Though a tad bit more for the laptop’s size, it offers an immersive gaming experience with its loud and clear sound.  It also boasts of support for both HDMI and Display Port.

The great processor and graphics of Asus U35Jc-A1 are what makes it lead the bandwagon. It is backed by a memory of 4GB, 1,066 MHz DDR3 and 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive. Front-firing Altec Lansing stereo speakers give a pleasant experience for movies and webchat. Though it lacks an optical drive, it makes up with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i3 370M and glossy 13-inch 16:9 screen with resolution of 1,366×768 pixels. It comes with an in-built operating system of Windows 7 Home Premium. At $849, though it is expensive, its 2.4 GHz Intel Core i3 370M processor simply takes the award.

A costly but effective buy.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X100e 2876 – Turion Neo X2 L625 1.6 GHz – 11.6″ TFT comes with a 1.6 GHz AMD Turion Neo X-2 Dual-Core L625 processor with a 2GB, 667 MHz DDR2 memory a 2GB d a 250GB hard disk,processor  and a 250GB hard disk. An 11.6” TFT screen makes it ultraportable. Ideal for office use, this laptop starts at 529$. The only concern is the limiting single-core AMD Neo CPU which mars the running of high-graphics games on it. The keyboard and ergonomics are above par than other laptops and the investment seems worth the money if you’re interested in buying a machine for office-work.

With 2.1GHz AMD Athlon II P320 processor,  3GB (DDR2 SDRAM 1333MHz) of memory,  320GB hard drive at 5,400rpm and Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250  (ideal for multimedia tasks and mainstream gamin) Dell Inspiron iM501R-1212PBL (14.8 x 10.3 x 1.3 inches) is quite an affordable buy costing $549.

Good looks (peacock blue colour); clean design; spacious keyboard; conveniently located HDMI and eSATA ports; webcam (Dell’s Webcam Central app); above-average rattling-free audio output (boosted by speaker’s position on front edge) and multitouch touch pad are its noticeable features.

The 15.6-inch display (1,366×768-pixel resolution, LED backlights) qualifies as HD.

Worth a buy.

This Netbook (Processor 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455; Memory 1GB, 667MHz DDR2; Hard drive 250GB 5,400rpm) has nothing extraordinary to offer, but it does the job.  A little keyboard scramping and lack of HD features are issues of concern but are acceptable in a $349 laptop especially one with long battery life and solid design.

Keyboared has well responding but small keys. Multitouch touchpad is smooth and wide.

It is absolutely fine for everyday tasks and Web browsing, even playback of local video files, but streaming videos at times create problems and switching to full screen exhibits choppy effects.

First look at the HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx gives you the impression that it is an exceptional laptop, but actually turns out to be fairly average. The HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx has a very attractive design, a 15.6 inches display, large hard drive, long battery life, large keyboard and multi touchpad. Basically in spite of boasting such high-end specifications the HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx does not fare well in terms of performance. It also has a load of extra features like a built-in fingerprint reader, quick webcam, and a bunch of software’s from HP. It has a MS Windows 7 Home Premium Edition preinstalled. It’s a good buy for those who give a lot importance to looks.

The HP Pavilion DV5-2035DX is the kind of laptop that tries to fit into the gap between budget laptops and mainstream laptops. Design wise it boasts of a subdued and unified look. The HP Pavilion DV5-2035DX features a 14.5 inch display and an AMD Turion II processor. The keyboard is near perfect but one might find a little initial difficulty in using the new touch pad with its integrated mouse buttons. If you are frequently on the move the HP Pavilion DV5-2035DX can be a good choice as it is compact and scores in weight and size over other laptops.
